Physician Leadership coaching, physician burnout, stress management, medical malpractice

The work with our clients is very confidential and even though we want to share with you the successes of our clients, we withhold their names to honor our confidentiality agreement.

Physician Stress control and physician burnout prevention program
Starting Situation At age 43, Dr. M. was brought to a hospital with a light stroke. This event hit Dr. M. hard. It had an effect on his practice and it impacted his family. Suddenly, he realized that he had to make some drastic changes in his life if he wanted to have a healthy future and see his children ages 7, 11 and 13 grow up.
Actions Personal Life:
Dr. M. took a reality check with a focus on his priorities, values and long-term vision. Once he was clear on the path he wanted to take, he drastically simplified his life by giving up volunteer responsibilities and delegating more work.

Work Life:
Dr. M. was very proud of his team but he felt that a few people didn't perform at their best. At the beginning and at the end of the program we performed a staff survey that rated the motivation and satisfaction level of the staff members. At the same time, Dr. M. (and Iris) held frequent meetings with his staff to brainstorm ideas to improve the flow and the efficiency in the practice.

Results Dr. M. dramatically de-cluttered his office and developed systems that allow him to speed up his paper work.

Together with his family he created a family activity plan. The plan included joint activities such as family trips, important sport matches of the children, family dinners, pick up and drop off days from school, dates with his wife and weekend trips.

He strategized impacting techniques to motivate his staff and communicate more effectively.

The motivational level of his staff improved from satisfied to very satisfied.

He cut back his working days to 4 days.

Within six months, Dr. M. went from being in a personal crisis to being a successful leader in two areas of his life: his family and his practice. The Balanced Physician program broke through the crisis and helped him prioritize his choices and take effective action.

Starting Situation Dr. S. a young surgeon was extremely satisfied with her professional work but the home front was a complete chaos.

As a mother of 2 small children, she felt like that she was drowning in her personal responsibilities. Her home was totally disorganized, she never felt like she spent enough time with her children but sometimes felt resentment towards her children when she felt drained and exhausted.

Action One of the biggest lessons Dr. S. had to learn was the ability to say "No" to other people's requests. She volunteered too much of her time for activities that didn't serve her immediate goals. So rather than taking on new responsibilities, Dr. S. gave up activities that overwhelmed her and took too much of her time.

With the help of a personal organizer, Dr. S. worked on 2 conscutive weekends to straighten up her home, organize paper work, develop systems for easy storage.

Results Organizing her home left Dr. S. extremely joyful and cleaned up a lot of space, not only physical but also mental.

Dr. S. devoted regular "self-time" that she devotes to physical exercise and painting.

Knowing how to "refill her energy tank quickly" allows her to enjoy her children more and she feels now that she has the patience and the time needed for her children.

Starting Situation Dr. D. was referred to the Balanced Physician program by Dr. B., the owner of the practice. Dr. D. had been working in Dr. B.'s practice for 2 years. Even though his clinical skills were impecable, his patient relationship skills were not meeting the standards of Dr. B. He received too many complaints about Dr. D.'s negative remarks towards his patients and his staff.

Dr. D. was open to suggestions but didn't really feel that he was in the wrong.

Actions Through several assessments Dr. D. learned new insights about his communication skills, his leadership style and his personal preferences.

We developed a feedback form that allowed Dr. D. to get immediate input from his patients and some staff members.

Through role plays, awareness exercises and adaptation of new communication techniques, Dr. D. felt that he was able to connect with his patients and his staff more effectively.

In her own words:

Dear Iris,

I wanted to let you know that working with you has been immeasurably valuable to me.

When I first saw you speak, I had not heard of life or business coaching before, but I knew your proactive, solution-oriented coaching methods were exactly what I needed. I was an unhappy workaholic who rushed through each day just to get to the next. I did not balance my family or personal needs with the time put into my business. I struggled daily with the overwhelming tasks and responsibilities. I handled employee issues in an inconsistent and arbitrary manner - primarily based on my own stress level. I was over-worked, over-stressed, and without the happiness, joy, and passion that I had once found in my work.

In working with you, I regained that sense of joy and passion. I attribute this change directly to the ability to explore issues with you that I cannot share with my partner, colleagues, or employees and choose not to share with my husband. I am comforted by the fresh perspective that you provide and have always found and aways find your knowledge and counsel right on target. You are an astute business person with armslength access to an incredible amount of information. Additionally, your accurate notes capture my thoughts so that we are able to re-visit on-going issues months later to assess changes and progress.

I wholeheartedly recommend you and your services to anyone who needs a secure environment to explore business and personal issues with the goal of gaining insight and making positive changes. The investment I made is worth every cent!
