Case Study: Regaining passion for medicine through self-management and self care

The Client: Dr. G, a cardiologist, was referred by the managing partner. The managing partner was concerned with the performance of Dr. G. His schedule was by far not as busy as the ones of his colleagues. He run behind with his paperwork. The staff voiced frustration that they never ended their work days on time, making them rush to pick up children from day care at the end of the day and missing personal obligations.

Passion for Medicine

The issue:
Dr. G. is a perfectionist who puts a lot of pressure on himself and on his staff. The result is overwhelm, exhaustion and inefficiency. As we began working together, Dr. G. realized that he wasn’t very satisfied in his work. He dreaded going to the office and he contemplated a career change.

The managing partner wanted me to work with Dr. G. on his time management principles but that was not Dr. G's challenge.

The process
Dr. G. and I met at his office for our evaluation session. It allowed me to see him in his environment and observe some of his systems and processes.

Dr. G was open to the coaching process right from the beginning. He was relieved that he finally had an opportunity to voice his thoughts, fears and aspirations.

In the beginning we focused on his energy management. He had a lot of tolerations in his personal life and practice which wasted his time and zapped his energies. I also challenged him to include more self-care routines in his life. He used to be a Badminton player that he gave up years ago but with some planning he was able to include an exercise routine 3 times a week.

Small changes that focused on his well-being and collaborative communication and planning with his wife lifted not only his spirits but also his enthusiasm for medicine.

He was able to tap back into his passion for medicine and he worked on strategies to build up his patient load again. Because he loves to spend time with his patients, we worked on strategies to continue being relationship-oriented without getting behind in the schedule and his paperwork.

The Outcome

Dr. G. feels more balanced and in control of his schedule. He makes sure that he takes time for his own well-being; he is becoming more aware of his own energy level and has practical tools to raise it. He also included more systems in his practice to stay on schedule and leave on time.

This had also an effect on the staff. The staff noticed that Dr. G. is more enthusiastic and positive. They communicate more often and hold each other accountable.

Running behind on paperwork and schedules is no issue anymore.

Staff members are on time now when it comes to picking up their children from day care.
