Work-life balance is a common challenge through-out the industrialized world and especially in the healthcare field. Most physicians face the challenge of wanting to succeed in their profession, yet retain enough quality time for their family and recreation.
For better or worse, a medical career can be an all-consuming part of life. Statistics show that three times more physicians work 60-plus hours per week than any other professional group.
The term "work-life balance" tends to be ambiguous and many experts have differing opinions on an appropriate definition.
Based on my experience and studying, my definition for work life balance is: "The integration of work and family by setting personal goals and understanding personal values so that neither work nor family consumes the other."
Integration here means juggling your personal and professional lives so that you are happy with the amount of energy you put into each.
